Success breeds confidence, and confidence breeds success. But confidence doesn’t come naturally for most of us. We must develop it in ourselves, and, as leaders, we must develop it in others.
How?
We start at the bottom and work up.
Level 1 — The confidence to try. The goal at this level is attempting the discipline, not success. If you only do the things you are great at, you won’t do much in life. You seldom start at the top. You have to foster an understanding of what that feels like to give something new a try.
Level 2 — The confidence to learn. Here the goal is growth. You’ve tried it and you’ve gotten some instruction and feedback, so now you have the confidence to grow and improve.
Level 3 — The confidence to do. You’ve learned enough to feel competent living out what you’ve learned on a consistent basis. You believe in yourself and your skills.
Level 4 — The confidence to master. Here you live it well enough and consistently enough that you can teach it to others. You replicate or reproduce your skills — and your confidence.

Perhaps there’s a Level 5 – The confiidence to create. Here you can improvise and create anew. You have the confidence to be a leader.
Great points Mark. I have been taught, and still teach that knowledge breeds confidence. Now, I can reference your 4 Levels as well. Thanks!
