Unemployment is high. People need work. People want a good job.
Many, perhaps, but not all.
Case in point: after receiving a resume we scheduled an interview with a job candidate last week. My schedule was tight and I had to forgo another meeting, but I wanted to accommodate the applicant.
She didn’t show up. Or call. We’ve not heard from her since.
She evidently changed her mind, either about wanting the job or any job for that matter. I can understand that. I can’t understand why she wouldn’t have shared that information with us. Rude.
After tossing her resume I moved on. But it did give me pause.
Pogo famously said we have met the enemy and they are us. All of us need to guard against becoming our own worst enemy. Especially when looking for a job.
She must have viewed the position as just a “job”. Although I think too it was very rude and unprofessional to not call, she didn’t see the enormous potential for the chance to have a career with Sanborn and Associates. If a person sees a job in the paper and just looks at it as a paycheck, what a waste of your life. Not that it was Sanborn and Associates- it could have been a number of employers with the same benefits. Even in a down economy, there is so much potential for growth personally and professionly in many jobs today. I think she didn’t see the gold she was standing on.
If you apply for a position with a company without doing any research, thats not smart.
If you apply for a position with Sanborn , and not show for the interview with Mark, thats insane.
I agree communication is a powerful tool. This candidate should have sent some sort of reply-even a phone call if time was too short. And a written note should have also been sent even if it would have been received later. One never knows when paths will cross. Besides it’s a courteous gesture.
I also believe that companies should send a communication to applicants. Many don’t leaving the applicant dangling-Should I continue to apply elsewhere? Should I continue to apply for other positions within this company? What was needed that caused my application to not be accepted? Even if mail is too costly, a phone call or an email should be done. Again, it’s a courteous gesture.
