Penn, of the magic duo Penn and Teller, is an avowed atheist. Recently he blogged about a man who presented him with a copy of the Bible after a performance. You can see the video blog here.
Penn makes some insightful comments about the experience that you can evaluate for yourself. He obviouslly doesn’t believe in God but acknowledges that if someone does believe in God and an eternity in heaven or hell, then they shouldn’t be uncomfortable in sharing his or her beliefs. To jeopardize another’s eternity to avoid an awkward social situation was be hateful (to paraphrase Penn).
I really enjoy Penn’s magic and humor. I disagree with his philosophy and worldview. And I respect the way he deals with opposing viewpoints. For me it is an example of how we can all dialogue about differences of opinions and viewpoints without denigrating others.
Several times Penn says the man who gave him the bible was “a good man.” I believe Penn is a good man as well.
hey Mark
