No matter how hard you try, not all prospects or customers are going to love you.
We want to think there is something we can do to win them over. We hate it our best efforts are misunderstood or unappreciated by the people who really would benefit from what we do.We bristle when a competitor whose products or services are inferior to our own is chosen.
I’ve experienced it. You’ve experienced. Sometimes there is just no accounting for taste.
Life is always a hoot, but it isn’t always fair. That is why not everybody is going to love you.
Do your best. Be true to yourself, your brand and your value proposition.
Understand that and let them go.
Then move on to those who will love you and what you do.
Most everyone who has been in business for a few years has been told at some point not to try to be everything to everybody. However, it cuts deeply when we discover that someone doesn’t love who we are and rave about what we do/sell.
It’s so easy to fall into the trap of trying to please the unpleasable to the point we turn our back to our core customer and focus on the customer who ‘doesn’t love us.’
I, for one, and guilty of this and will heed your advice. Thanks, Mark.
I think Simon Sinek said it best in his Ted Talk on “How Great Leaders Inspire Action.” You need to find customers who share your vision and don’t bother with trying to convince those who don’t.
